International Book Week... is it?

Al een paar dagen lang verschijnen er op Facebook allerlei berichten op mijn tijdlijn met de volgende tekst:

It's International Book Week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 54, post the 5th sentence as your status. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your status.

Heel even dacht ik eraan om mee te doen. Maar toen dacht ik: ís het eigenlijk echt wel International Book Week? Voor hetzelfde geld loopt mijn kennissenkring gewoon een week achter, en als ik dan te laat ben met mijn post is het alsof ik mijn vrienden in januari een vrolijk kerstfeest wens. Via Google is in eerste instantie niets terug te vinden over deze themaweek, behalve de bovenstaande post, op allerhande fora, daterend van 6 dagen tot 3 uur geleden.

Een rondje Wikipedia leert:

‘International Book Week is an awareness week mentioned in a socially generated internet meme where users of social networking sites share arbitrary lines from nearby books. Unlike globally publicised events such as World Book Day, International Book Week is not a formally established awareness week, and does not exist outside of the meme.’

Leuke meme, jongens... Zijn jullie er allemaal ingetrapt of doen jullie mee om interessant te doen? Als ik had meegedaan, was het dus niet eens ‘Vrolijk Kerstfeest’ in januari geweest, maar gewoon een ‘Zalig Sint-Juttemis! International Book Week of niet, deze actie gaat sowieso voorbij aan wat ik belangrijk vind. Ik ben trots op wat ik lees. En als ik een zin uit een boek wil overtypen op Facebook, dan deel ik het liefst de mooiste zin uit het boek, en raad ik iedereen aan om het boek waarin deze zin staat ook te lezen.

Sowieso betwijfel ik of iedereen braaf het ‘closest book to you’ pakt, of toch gaat voor het boek met de meest interessante vijfde zin op pagina 54 dat hij/zij in huis heeft. Misschien schaam je je een beetje dat je Twilight aan het lezen bent, en pak je voor deze gelegenheid toch maar een boek uit de kast dat iets meer literair verantwoord is. Misschien is het eerste boek binnen handbereik wel een kookboek, en wacht je met het posten van de status tot het dichtst bijzijnde boek een leukere optie is. Eerlijk is eerlijk; dat is wat ik zou doen.

Maar nogmaals: ik ben trots op wat ik lees. Momenteel ben ik Sherlock Holmes - The Complete Novels and Stories aan het lezen. Dat is geweldig, en iedereen zou het moeten lezen. De vijfde zin op pagina 54 is niet boeiend en daarom deel ik liever het prachtige sfeerbeeld op pagina 138:

It was a September evening and not yet seven o’clock, but the day had been a dreary one, and a dense drizzly fog lay low upon the great city. Mud-coloured clouds drooped sadly over the muddy streets. Down the Strand the lamps were but misty splotches of diffused light which threw a feeble circular glimmer upon the slimy pavement. The yellow glare from the shop-windows streamed out into the steamy, vaporous air and threw a murky, shifting radiance across the crowded thoroughfare. There was, to my mind, something eerie and ghostlike in the endless procession of faces which flitted across these narrow bars of light--sad faces and glad, haggard and merry. Like all humankind, they flitted from the gloom into the light and so back into the gloom once more.
